Zeno’s second reign began in 476, the year conventionally associated with the end of the western Roman Empire. From Constantinople, Roman government, law and imperial ceremony continued. The military emperor on the obverse is answered by Victory holding a long cross, showing how the visual language of Rome was being reshaped rather than simply abandoned.
