The Story Behind the Strike
Constans II inherited the throne as a child amid the rapid loss of eastern provinces. His long reign was shaped by war, religious controversy and an unusual attempt to govern from Sicily. This single-ruler solidus differs from the dynastic issue in the collection. The emperor appears alone, with the long beard characteristic of his later portraiture, while the cross potent on steps occupies the reverse without subsidiary figures. The result is visually austere: personal command and Christian protection are the only elements required. Clipping, edge marks and scratches should be read as evidence of the coin’s later life rather than concealed imperfections.
