The Story Behind the Strike
Constantine IV came to power in 668 and is remembered for the defence of Constantinople during prolonged Arab attack. His gold coinage maintains a disciplined image of military command. On the reverse, the cross potent stands between his brothers Heraclius and Tiberius, who had been associated with imperial dignity before being removed from succession. The design therefore captures a moment when dynasty was displayed as unity even though power would ultimately be concentrated in one ruler. The clipped fabric adds a later material chapter to a coin whose official imagery sought perfect balance.
