The Story Behind the Strike

Constantine IX Monomachos ruled from 1042 to 1055 after marrying the empress Zoe. His reign is associated with elite culture and patronage, but also with military and fiscal pressures that would shape the later eleventh century. This histamenon presents no such uncertainty. Christ sits enthroned; Constantine appears as the appointed earthly ruler. The broad, slightly changing fabric of eleventh-century gold gave engravers an expansive field for icon-like images. Scrapes and wrinkling belong to this specimen’s condition, while the design itself preserves the official serenity of sacred monarchy.
