The Story Behind the Strike
Leo IV’s short reign continued the Isaurian dynasty and associated his young son Constantine VI with rule. Their paired portrait occupies one face of this solidus. On the other, Leo III and Constantine V represent the preceding generations. The coin therefore does more than name rulers: it constructs a dynastic lineage across both sides of a single object. The unusually strong surface grade preserves the clarity of that program. For a viewer, the important story is not simply who appears, but how ancestry, present authority and future succession are carefully separated and then reunited through the act of turning the coin.
