The Story Behind the Strike
Romanus I Lekapenos rose from naval command and became senior emperor alongside the legitimate Macedonian ruler Constantine VII. He elevated his own son Christopher, and this solidus makes that political arrangement visible. Christ occupies one face in majesty; Romanus and Christopher share the other. The hierarchy is carefully controlled: sacred authority is singular, while earthly government is collegiate and dynastic. The clipped edge and graffiti belong to the object’s later life, but the official composition preserves Romanus’s effort to make the Lekapenos family appear as an enduring imperial house.
