The Story Behind the Strike
Romanus III Argyros became emperor through marriage to Zoe, daughter of Constantine VIII. His histamenon answers the unusual circumstances of accession with ceremonial certainty. Christ stands on one face; on the other, the Virgin crowns Romanus. The emperor’s authority is therefore presented as received from the sacred realm, not simply acquired through marriage and court politics. The composition reflects the increasingly icon-like character of eleventh-century gold, where devotional imagery and political theology merge into a portable coronation scene.
