The Story Behind the Strike

Romanus IV Diogenes became emperor through marriage to Eudocia Makrembolitissa and ruled within a court already shaped by the Doukas dynasty. The histamenon makes that constitutional complexity visible. Eudocia and Romanus appear with Christ, while the young princes Constantine, Michael and Andronikos embody the inherited dynasty. The arrangement presents unity, but it also reveals how many claims had to be balanced. Romanus’s defeat at Manzikert in 1071 would transform his reign’s historical reputation. The coin offers a different view: not a battlefield, but a carefully negotiated image of family, sacred approval and shared legitimacy.
