The Story Behind the Strike
John II succeeded Alexius I in 1118 and continued the military and administrative recovery of the Komnenian state. His hyperpyron preserves the reformed gold denomination established by his father, while refining its ceremonial imagery. Christ stands on one face; the Virgin crowns John on the other. The composition makes succession more than hereditary transfer. The ruler is visibly received into office through heavenly agency, and the stable hyperpyron carries that image through taxation, diplomacy and elite exchange. The graffito is part of this specimen’s later passage through individual hands.
