The Story Behind the Strike
After the capture of Constantinople in 1204, the empire of Nicaea became the principal Byzantine successor state in Asia Minor. John III Doukas Vatatzes strengthened that state and prepared the recovery achieved by his successors. His Magnesian hyperpyron deliberately continues imperial sacred imagery: Christ stands on one face, while the Virgin and emperor share the other with a cross. The coin asserts that legitimate Roman kingship survived without possession of the old capital. Its broad fabric, regional mint and graffiti make it an exceptional witness to sovereignty maintained through displacement.
