The Story Behind the Strike
Heraclius associated his son Heraclius Constantine with power at an early age. Their paired portrait makes succession visible on an object designed to travel through the empire and beyond it. The senior emperor’s beard distinguishes age and rank, while the younger colleague embodies continuity. On the reverse, the cross potent rises on steps, replacing the older figure of Victory with a direct Christian sign. The design proved influential far outside Byzantium: related standing-emperor and cross types were adapted in neighbouring kingdoms and in early Islamic gold. This coin is therefore both a dynastic statement and part of a much wider visual conversation about sovereignty.
