The Story Behind the Strike
Heraclius seized the throne from Phocas in 610 and inherited a state close to collapse under Persian invasion. His campaigns eventually carried Roman arms deep into Persian territory and restored the relic of the True Cross to Jerusalem. Yet the triumph was brief: within years, Arab conquest removed Syria, Palestine and Egypt from imperial control. This solidus compresses that extraordinary reign into two signs. The emperor confronts the viewer in military dress; the cross potent rises on the reverse with austere certainty. Its clipped and brushed surfaces record a later physical history, while its imagery preserves the confidence of an empire defining survival through ruler and faith.
