Manuel I Komnenos ruled from 1143 to 1180 and pursued an expansive diplomatic and military policy across the Mediterranean world. His hyperpyron uses the youthful Christ Emmanuel, an image associated with incarnation and prophecy, rather than the mature Pantokrator. Manuel stands on the reverse with the emblems of imperial office. The pairing is both devotional and political: the ruler’s worldly ambition is framed by a sacred image of promised salvation. The broad concave coin also demonstrates the distinctive visual experience of Komnenian gold, where light moves across a shallow curved surface rather than a flat Roman-style flan.
