The Story Behind the Strike
Theophilus ruled from 829 to 842 as the final emperor to promote iconoclasm. His solidus does not use a sacred portrait. Instead, Michael II and Constantine appear together on one face, while Theophilus occupies the other. Constantine had died young, yet his inclusion strengthened the family narrative by presenting a fuller dynasty than political reality allowed. The design turns the coin into a miniature memorial and a statement of succession. Its clear portraits show how ninth-century gold could construct legitimacy through ancestry while religious images remained contested at court.
