The Story Behind the Strike
In the final years of Heraclius’s reign, succession became urgent. Heraclius Constantine and Heraclonas were both presented beside the senior emperor, each holding a globus cruciger. The arrangement is not family portraiture in a private sense; it is constitutional imagery in gold. Height, beard and position establish rank while declaring that imperial authority will continue through the household. The reverse answers the three changing rulers with a single cross upon steps. The contrast between dynasty and permanence gives this type its power: human government passes from one figure to another, while the sacred order claimed by the empire remains fixed.
