The Story Behind the Strike
Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos was born into the Macedonian dynasty but spent many years overshadowed by regents and senior colleagues. As sole ruler he became closely associated with ceremony, administration and the preservation of imperial knowledge. By placing his son Romanus II beside him, the solidus announced an orderly succession. Christ dominates the obverse; father and son share the reverse around a patriarchal cross. The sequence is theological and constitutional at once: divine kingship comes first, while human rulers govern through dynasty and inherited office.
